John Legend and The Roots Advert Analysis

This is an example of a magazine advert for John Legend and The Roots. The advert is very simple and consists of a large image occupying the centre of the advert. The image is of John Legend and The Roots performing live. This is an obvious feature to have within a magazine advert as it shows the band or singer to the audience who may be attracted by the image or because text does not appeal to them much, but rather they get drawn in by images. It is also essential to have it of a certain size that is bigger than average as the audience will be able to spot it from a distance and therefore get drawn into it. Whereas if it were small then it would be difficult to identify the band and attract audience from a distance and straight away. The image of John Legend and The Roots is very dull and not very bright. It is very subtle which goes with the theme of the singer as their music is based on very subtle music. The image of John Legend and The Roots is also very subtle and they have a very calming type of image. In addition the image portrays and relates to a more mature audience as the colours that are used are brown and black and fading. Their clothing within this image also says that they aim for a mature audience as they are dressed very smart wearing a suit of again dark colours. This presents them as quite a serious band.

The location within the image is a building with windows. The building does not seem expensive neither poor. It seems very classy and suits the type of location that the band would perform at and therefore portrays the image of the band. The name, title of the album and release date are the only information that appears. This is a good feature as the purpose of the magazine advert is to advertise the album and an advert is to be looked at for probably a minute or two and therefore needs to have only the information that is relevant. It needs to be straight to the main point and therefore have lots of images and as little text as possible. The text within the advert are coloured in bright yellow. This works excellently as the background image is very dark and black and therefore by having yellow as the text colour makes it stand out so much and when the audience look at the poster the first thing they will most likely do is read the text. The text size is also very appropriate as the title John Legend and The Roots is titled a bit larger than the album name and release date. This is important as the first thing that the audience will want to know is who the singers and the band are.
